Wireless Surveillance solution
End User: Texas A&M University
Manufacturer:
Fluidmesh Networks, Inc.
Integrator: Jamie Bradford, LENSEC, LLC Systems Solutions Director

OBJECTIVE:
The objective for public safety project for Texas A&M University, Commerce was to provide police and administrators with IP video surveillance visibility in high-rise dormitory elevators. Jamie Bradford, LENSEC, LLC Systems Solutions Director, served as the integrator on the project, which began in October, 2010.

CHALLENGE:
Coming up with a cost effective technical solution was a major concern, because there was no pre-existing IP connectivity to the elevator cars. Wireless connectivity had to be attained inside the elevator shafts in order to connect the cameras mounted in the elevator cars to the larger campus network. A definite need existed for video in the cars, but wired connectivity was difficult and very expensive, because of the high cost of traveling cables and the labor rates elevator manufacturers and service companies charge for access to the elevator shaft.

SOLUTION:
Wireless mesh proved the best way to go for this installation. LENSEC prepared two estimates for the client – one wired, and one wireless. The wireless option was the most cost effective from both equipment costs and installation labor. It also made for a quicker installation and less downtime on the elevator. The installation, Bradford reports, took less than four hours per elevator. The costs savings, he says, were about 35% less than standard wire line and attributed to the labor cost savings.

EQUIPMENT USED:
The complete security solution included Fluidmesh MITO 1100s, Axis IP Camera Systems, and LENSEC Video Management System Software.  The Fluidmesh MITO 1100 radios were used in a point to point configuration. The team placed radios in the elevator penthouse control room shaft, and fixed corresponding radios to the top of the elevator car.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION AT A GLANCE:

LENSEC, LLC is the IP video management system solution and integrator for Texas A&M Commerce. The Texas A&M University Police Department had elected to move forward with IP video surveillance to enable distributed video surveillance for their administrators and first responders. After a few phone calls between Alex Clark, System Engineer for Fluidmesh, and Jamie Bradford, LENSEC Systems Solutions Director, it was clear that the Fluidmesh MITO fit the challenges of this project. The support that Fluidmesh had provided LENSEC on previous opportunities with other clients proved to Bradford that Fluidmesh engineers and equipment could meet this challenge.

LENSEC’s turn-key integration service incorporates a blend of common off the shelf products. “Providing options to the customer’s solution is key to its success and value,” Bradford notes. “LENSEC scans the industry for cost effective, quality, and reliable products and hardware. When selecting a wireless partner for this solution, Fluidmesh had just announced their new MITO technology and hardware. LENSEC worked closely with Fluidmesh to understand the challenges and how to best meet the needs. The MITO series wireless radios coupled with the familiar Web interface was a great fit for the elevator solution.”

"Fluidmesh was excited to work with LENSEC, a trusted channel partner with a great track record in the education world,” notes Alexander Clark, Regional Sales Manager/Sales Engineer for Fluidmesh. “Wireless connectivity can solve so many challenging problems, and this is one more example of how outside the box thinking can bring great value to the end user. We’re glad to be part of a team that brought a great combination of technologies to bear to keep the students and faculty of TAMU safe and secure."

The client is very impressed with how quickly the installation was done and the quality, speed, and simplicity of the system. Jason Bone, Lieutenant, Texas A&M Police, reports that “We thought it would be a very expensive undertaking and that we’d have to hire a third party to install cable into these elevator cars. This wireless system proved a much better way to go. It’s working great!”
