Axis Communications, the global leader in network video1 and Boston-based Fluidmesh Networks have supplied video servers, network cameras and wireless mesh transceivers to move to wireless IP-surveillance at Campo dei Fiori shopping centre in Gavirate, northern Italy
Centro Commerciale Campo dei Fiori is situated in the town of Gavirate, ten kilometres from Varese – the centre of Varese province in northern Italy. The shopping centre has 21,700 square metres of space accommodating one large 4,200 square metre hypermarket, 29 smaller stores, a large self-service restaurant and a 3,000 square metre sports centre.
Prior to 2005, the shopping centre relied on an analogue CCTV surveillance system which had been installed when the centre was originally built. Security managers at the centre found the old system delivered poor quality images recorded onto VHS tape – making access to recorded images time-consuming. During 2005, the shopping centre wanted to make the switch to IP-surveillance but did not have an extensive cable infrastructure. To address this, the centre called on Fluidmesh Networks to establish a wireless network specifically designed for IP-surveillance use. The innovative wireless transmitters developed by Fluidmesh Networks offer significant advantages in terms of flexibility and ease of installation. Each new camera can be easily added to the network, without having to change the configuration of the rest of the system.
Fluidmesh wireless technology helps to optimise real-time video transmission, thanks to its ability to identify the best path to use for the transmission of video data packages. The output from each of the centre’s existing CCTV cameras was fed into three AXIS 241S (Single Channel) video servers and eight AXIS 240Q (Quad) video servers. The Fluidmesh Network wireless mesh device then transmits the feeds to a wireless gateway, but can also dynamically re-route data packets to other Fluidmesh devices to achieve real-time video transmission.
Campo dei Fiori has now used a wide variety of Axis network cameras tailored to specific requirements, including the AXIS 210 and 210A for indoor applications, AXIS 211 and seven AXIS 221 cameras for outdoor use. Adding new network cameras to the Fluidmesh wireless device is now a simple process which does not require reconfiguration of the overall installation. The centre is also using two AXIS 212PTZ Network Cameras with its ability to offer a full overview and instant pan/tilt/zoom without using moving parts.
Filippo Cordaro, security co-ordinator, Centro Commerciale Campo dei Fiori commented:
“The installed system is much more efficient that the previous one. For someone like me who has the task of supervising the security of customers in the shopping centre, having high-definition images available in real time is a considerable advantage. We’ve been able to prevent theft both inside our shops and in the customer car park. With almost 80 cameras installed, we can say we have achieved practically total coverage of the shopping centre.”
Andrea Sorri, country manager, Axis Communications Italy added:
“The integration of the latest generation Fluidmesh and Axis products has resulted in an IP-surveillance system that would not have been possible to obtain with traditional analogue solutions. We are delighted by the integration with the Fluidmesh products and are confident about a strong collaboration in the future.”
Umberto Malesci, Fluidmesh Networks President and co-founder commented:
“The Gavirate project allowed us to demonstrate once again the reliability of our emerging, innovative wireless technology. A few months ago, the centre’s management decided to renew their initial trust in our wireless solution, so that the shopping center could rely on an innovative, technologically advanced video security solution which no other shopping center in Italy can boast.”
